PARENTING UNDER INFLUENCE

 OF TRAUMA

&

TRAUMA PROTOCOL

In my clinical experience, I have witnessed a significant number of clients who have brought their history of unresolved childhood trauma into their parenting.  I call this Parenting Under the Influence of Trauma (PUI).  As a result, if I could go back in time and hand my younger self a Trauma Protocol, I would include the following fundamental truths:

  • trauma is not simply what happens to us. It is also how our bodies experience what happens to us.
  • trauma can be obvious and overwhelming, but it can also be subtle, cumulative, and difficult to recognize.
  • post-traumatic stress can follow a devastating event (PTSD), while complex trauma can develop through repeated or prolonged experiences, particularly during childhood (C-PTSD).
  • unresolved trauma can affect relationships long after the original events have ended.

And most importantly, I would want  parents to know they can carry unresolved trauma into the raising of a child without knowing it and that could lead to estrangement.
